Having heard Runnicles lead Wagner’s week-long Ring Cycle at San Francisco Opera three years ago, one of the most unified and captivating I’ve ever experienced, I was hopeful for his substitution here in another “big” work. But to deliver such a success in a house that, in part, the advocacy of Mahler built, was a great accomplishment.  And one of the things that marked the success of late-minute substitute guest conductor Donald Runnicles in this powerful and daunting music was that his flowing, organic, at times even elegant interpretation of the work was fulfilling for the newcomer and the Mahler junkie alike.
