The incomparable American baritone Thomas Hampson opens the Series with a selection of songs by Mahler, of which he is a leading interpreter. The BBC SSO’s Chief Conductor Donald Runnicles then takes us on the most far-reaching of all Mahler’s journeys through the Germanic imagination, the mighty Fifth Symphony, with its popular Adagietto, made famous in the film ofDeath in Venice. And in Benjamin Britten’s centenary year, his sparky Aldeburgh overture gets the concert off to a flying start.
